Tree Trimming & Cutting - Free Estimates

Thinning, deadwood removal, structural pruning for young trees, and clearance off roofs and lines. We cut back to a branch that can take over, so the tree seals the cut instead of throwing out weak sprouts.

Timing matters

Most trees need a lighter trim than you expect

A lot of the pruning we get called in to repair was done by crews paid by the truckload: trees topped flat or stripped bare on the inside. On a healthy tree, one season of work should leave at least three-quarters of the leafy crown alone.

  • Don't wait — branches rubbing the roof or the line to your house, limbs snapped in a storm and still hanging, and weak or cracked forks that should be cabled.
  • Book for the right season — shaping young trees, thinning a dense crown to let light and wind through, taking out deadwood, and lifting limbs over the driveway.
  • Skip it — cutting a healthy tree down to stubs, clearing out all the inner branches, or hard summer cuts on native oaks. Each one sets the tree up for rot and brittle sprouts.
Included on every visit

Pruning done properly, not quickly

Clean cuts

We cut just outside the branch collar, or back to a side branch big enough to take the lead. You won't find stubs or a topped crown when we leave.

No climbing spikes

Spurs puncture the bark of a tree you're keeping, so our climbers prune on ropes and a harness instead, or from a lift when one can reach.

Cleanup included

We chip branches during the job, pull trimmings out of planting beds and off the roof, and blow off the driveway and gutters.

Care notes in writing

You get a short note on what we removed, why we removed it, and when the tree is due for another look.

On the job

How a pruning visit runs

Arrival

Agree on the goal

Before any cutting, we look at the tree together and settle on what the pruning should accomplish.

Early on

Safety cuts first

Dead wood, broken limbs, and branches rubbing each other go first, since those make the biggest safety difference.

Main work

Thinning and clearance

Next come the selective thinning and clearance cuts, with regular checks from the ground on how the crown is shaping up.

Wrap-up

Clean site, final look

We clear and blow off the work area, walk around the finished tree with you, and hand over the care notes.

Tree Trimming FAQ

The questions we get on every call

Call Now →

What time of year should trees be pruned?

For most trees, late winter is ideal. The tree is dormant, its structure is easy to see, and cuts seal quickly. Dead or storm-broken wood can come out in any month. We stay away from heavy summer pruning on native oaks because it opens them up to disease and sunburned bark.

Does pruning an oak require a permit?

Usually not on a home lot. Roseville generally exempts properties with an existing single- or two-family home, and Rocklin doesn't require a permit to prune. Oaks in HOA common areas, on commercial property, or on vacant land are a different story — we'll tell you at the estimate if your job needs a permit or an arborist report.

Will you top my tree to bring the height down?

No. Topping strips away the leaves the tree feeds on and triggers a flush of weakly attached sprouts that break in wind, so a topped tree ends up more hazardous than before. If height really is the issue, we'll talk through reducing the crown back to side limbs, or taking the tree out.

How much of a tree can come off in one visit?

Generally a quarter of the living crown at most in one season, and less than that on an older or struggling tree. If another quote calls for a lot more, ask what each of those cuts is supposed to accomplish.

Will you trim branches over my roof or near the power line?

Clearing branches off the roof, chimney, and driveway is everyday work for us, and we can usually clear the service line that feeds your house too. Branches near Roseville Electric's overhead lines are the utility's job, and they clear them at no charge. Call them first, and never trim near those lines yourself.

Trees getting overgrown?

Ask for a free written quote; most are done the same day. We'll be honest about what needs cutting and what doesn't.
